Pavel Florin became an unlikely cricket superstar after his unique bowling went viral for Romania champions Cluj at the 2019 European Cricket League. Cluj president Pavel broke a leg the week before the inaugural tournament - ECL19 - but battled on gamely despite the injury to send the internet into a spin.

European Cricket Family – Q & A Pavel Florin – Cricket’s Cult hero

As we continue our Stars of ECL series, take a look at how cricket’s cult hero is coping with the COVID-19 crisis in Romania.

How much of a disappointment was the postponement of ECL20??

It was a little depressing to hear the news about ECL20, because I had already put in a lot of preparation work and training for the tournament. But now I have adapted to the idea that there is always next time.

What’s your take on the recent ECL21 qualification announcement??

It's a moment of joy because our "story continues" and ECL21 is the next goal of my team, Cluj.

Who or what is your greatest inspiration at this time?

My mother, Pavel Rozalia, is a truly inspirational person who is almost always happy and smiling. Even at the age of 73, she would normally walk 10 km every day as part of her daily routine, but now with the restrictions, she can only do 5 km and is very upset!

How has your life changed since covid19 crisis?

I'm not a professional player and I don't have a job at the moment, so not much has changed financially. However, from a sporting perspective it is a disaster.

What’s the toughest part of the current covid19 crisis for you?

I have adapted to the situation but I can’t really say that my morale is too high at the moment. The most difficult part is not being able to play cricket and I miss the competitive feeling of taking part in matches.

Positively, what is the best part? If any?!

I have plenty of time to train so I make sure I do this daily, especially strength and conditioning.

What do you do more of these days? And less?

I spend a lot of time on social media, but I am unfortunately not able to socialize, which I miss a great deal.

What would be your dream FIRST game back after the fight has been won against covid19?

I hope to remain healthy so that I can play sometime in the future. If I stay healthy, then I can achieve any dream.

What was the highlight of your cricketing career?

I only started playing a few years ago, so I will let you know when I have finished in about 30 years!

The fastest bowler you've faced?

Aussie legend Jeff Thomson when we enjoyed a heated discussion about cricket and boxing.

And the best spinner faced?

My teammate Taranjeet Singh and Vinny Sandhu.

Who is the best batsman you've played with? And against?

Josh Philippe in beach cricket, Phil Salt in the nets and Brian Lara in the studio.
