As part of our Stars of the ECL series, Corey Rutgers discusses cricket during the COVID-19 crisis.

European Cricket Family – Q & A with Corey Rutgers

Corey Rutgers is V.O.C. Rotterdam and Belgium National Team Head coach, Fielding Coach for PSL Franchise Islamabad United and an integral member of the V.O.C. side that were crowned “Kings of Europe” at ECL19.

How much of a disappointment was the postponement of ECL20??

Obviously, we are all very disappointed. Everyone at V.O.C. Rotterdam was very excited to try and defend our title, but also enjoy a second year of what is a great event!

How has your life changed since covid19 crisis?

Everything has slowed down for myself. I was preparing for a very busy summer coaching V.O.C. Rotterdam and the Belgium National Team. Instead now like everyone else, keeping quiet and remaining hopeful the situation will improve and we may get some cricket at the end of the summer.

What’s the toughest part of the current covid19 crisis for you?

The uncertainty. Not knowing when the situation will improve is a tough one to take personally. Like everyone else, I would love desperately to have some direction and answers. But for now, we just have to remain patient.

Positively, what is the best part? If any?!

It is a good opportunity to catch up on some fitness or pick up a new hobby that you possibly wouldn’t have had time for in the past.

What would be your dream FIRST game back after the fight has been won against covid19?

To be honest, I think it doesn’t matter who it’s against or what format, any type of cricket when it is back is going to be a celebration day for all involved.

What was the highlight of your cricketing career so far?

Winning a couple trophies with V.O.C. Rotterdam in the past couple of seasons is a big highlight. But also winning my first franchise trophy as Head coach was a special moment.

Who is the best bowler you've worked with?

I was lucky enough to have South Africa legend Dale Steyn join us for PSL5 representing Islamabad United. He is an unbelievable bowler and person.

And the best spinner you’ve worked with?

Not that I’ve had much to do with his bowling, but watching the Dutch skipper Pieter Seelaar bowl up close or under the helmet at V.O.C. is always a privilege.

Who is the best batsman you've worked with?

There’s a few who stand out so it is REALLY tough to decide. But it’s between Luke Ronchi and Hashim Amla. Seeing how relaxed they both are and the way they go about it has been great.

Future goals with European cricket?

Obviously like us all over here, grow the game, get more kids playing and turning it into a popular European sport. Hopefully winning more trophies with V.O.C. and helping the Belgium Cricket Team climb the international rankings.
