In a significant last-minute development, the European XI will have a new Icon Player for the upcoming Weston Shield. Former Australian Test player Joe Burns has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. We extend our best wishes to Joe and hope to see him grace the European Cricket Network (ECN) in the near future.
Stepping into the Icon Player role is none other than Netherlands' star batter Max O'Dowd. Max is a familiar name in European cricket, having been a standout performer in the inaugural European Cricket League (ECL) in 2019. Representing V.O.C. Rotterdam, he was instrumental in their championship-winning campaign and was named the MVP of the tournament. His experience and success in the T10 format make him a perfect fit for the high-octane action of the Weston Shield.
O'Dowd's credentials extend beyond ECN competitions. He is the leading run-scorer for the Netherlands in white-ball cricket and has consistently delivered on the international stage. His aggressive stroke play and ability to adapt to different match situations will undoubtedly bolster European XI's chances this year.
"It feels like coming back home," said O'Dowd when asked about his return to ECN events. "The memories of 2019 are still fresh, and I’m excited to be part of this exciting tournament."
The European XI will be keen to improve on last year’s performance after falling short against the British & Irish XI. With O'Dowd's arrival, the team gains a proven match-winner who knows how to handle pressure on the big stage.
The Weston Shield begins on February 19 at the picturesque Cartama Oval, promising a week of explosive cricket action. Stay tuned to ECN channels for live coverage, updates, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
