The stage is set for another thrilling edition of the Weston Shield, and all eyes are on British & Irish XI as they gear up to defend their title. After triumphing in the inaugural tournament last year in Santarém, Portugal, the reigning champions are back with a strong squad, looking to go back-to-back in the expanded competition at Cartama Oval from February 19 to 23.
This year’s Weston Shield has doubled in size, growing from two teams to four, with the introduction of European XI, Asian XI, British & Irish XI, and World XI. Another exciting addition is the Icon Player system, bringing legendary experience to each squad. For British & Irish XI, that honor belongs to none other than Irish cricket icon Kevin O’Brien. Kevin, known for his explosive batting and wealth of experience, will be a key figure in guiding the team through the tournament.
The British & Irish XI squad features a well-balanced mix of experience and young talent, comprising six players from England, four from Ireland, two from Scotland, and one each from Jersey and Wales.
Several players from last year’s victorious squad are returning for another shot at glory, including Tom Hinley, Seamus Lynch, and Julius Sumerauer, who played crucial roles in their title-winning campaign. Their presence adds much-needed familiarity and stability to the squad, while fresh faces bring in new energy and depth.
Speaking about his involvement, Kevin O’Brien shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge:

With the tournament expanding to four teams and the introduction of Icon Players, the 2025 edition of the Weston Shield promises to be bigger and better. British & Irish XI will need to be at their best as they face increased competition, with new teams bringing in top-tier talent from across Europe.
Stay tuned for more updates as we build up to what promises to be an unforgettable Weston Shield!
