John Grima – Magic man in Malta

61-year-old John Grima was the magic man behind the stumps for winners Marsa CC at the 2020 European Cricket Series Malta.

An integral member of the winning team from Marsa, John caught the eye as wicket keeper with a series of smart performances, bagging four stumpings and three catches in the tournament.

Born in Sydney, John moved to the Mediterranean island with his Maltese parents in 1971. A professional musician, John is Head of Animation & Activities at Radisson Blu, Golden Sands Resort & Spa on the beautiful island.

The oldest player in the competition by ten years, John celebrated 30 years at Marsa Sports Club in March. He can now call upon a wealth of cricketing experience, but rediscovered his love for the game by accident way back in 1991 in Malta.

“I was singing in a restaurant and an acquaintance of mine was dining there. I went to greet him and shake his hand, but he said: ‘Not today John. I have injured my hand’. “I asked how did you do that?” ‘I was playing cricket,’ he replied.

John continued: “The rest is history and I hardly sang another song all night as we kept talking about cricket all through his dinner. I joined the club a few days later and have been a member of the Marsa Sports Club cricket section ever since.”

In the second week of action, Grima did not grimace after copping a nasty blow to the face, just above the eye, while keeping. To add insult to injury, John unfortunately bumped into a medic while departing the field of play.

“It was my own fault,” he said. “I was in such a rush to get off so that play could continue. All is well and I have made a full recovery.”

Speaking about his experience playing in the European Cricket Series Malta: "It was a fantastic competition to be involved in and we all had a very enjoyable two weeks. Having not experienced any T10 cricket before, it’s great to get the opportunity to play in this format of the game,” Grima said.
