ECN Czech Super Series is a new competition encompassing 40 high-octane T10 matches, coming to an exciting climax this weekend. Four group winners, Bohemian CC, Brno Rangers, Prague Spartans Vanguards and Prague Barbarians Vandals meet at the ECN Czech Super Series Championship weekend in the Czech capital Prague

REPORT: Four fantastic finishes to kick off ECN Czech Super Series Championship Weekend

Four fantastic finishes kicked off ECN Czech Super Series Championship Weekend in the capital Prague.

Prague Spartans Vanguards are the only unbeaten team after coming through two last over finishes unscathed, while Prague Barbarians Vandals suffered exactly the opposite fate via two dramatic last ball defeats. Brno Rangers and Bohemian CC won one and lost one, but all four sides retain a hope of winning the inaugural ECN Czech Super Series.

In slightly overcast conditions at Scott Page Field in the Czech capital, Prague Spartans Vanguards top the standings going into the final day. In the opening match, the Vanguards racked up 131, the highest score of the day against Bohemian CC. Openers Satyajit Sengupta (51 off 30) and Kranthi Venkataswamy (44 off 20) put on 96 for the first wicket, before Parth Bhalodiya (21 off 10) boosted the score with some lusty late hitting.

In reply, Zahid Mahmood (30 off 11) and Abul Farhad (23 off 12) provided hope. But, despite taking 28 from the last two overs, Bohemian were never quite up with the run rate, falling an agonising 5 runs short. Kranthi Venkataswamy picked up a couple of useful wickets to go with his runs at the top of the order to claim the Player of the Match award.

Going back to back, Bohemian CC got the better of Prague Barbarians Vandals in a dramatic last ball finish. Batting first, the Vandals were only able to post 80 on the back of Divyendra Singh’s 30. Abul Farhad picked up two quick wickets in his only over, while opening bowler Sazib Bhuiyan only conceded seven in his allocation. Chasing 81, and having gone so close to chasing down 131 in the opening game, it might have been considered an easy task for Bohemian CC. Promoted to open, Zahid Mahmood again top scored with 23 but Honey Gori stalled the scoring with 2-4 from his allocation. Amid great drama, five penalty runs were given to Bohemian at the end of the ninth over, as a result of the Vandals tardy over rate. Needing only three from the final over, Bohemian proceeded to lose four wickets in five balls bowled by Sabawoon Davizi. However, Waheed Ur Rehman lofted the final ball of the over to the long on boundary for the Bohemian win.

And the drama was not done for the day. Next up, Kranthi Venkataswamy again knocked up a big score with 63 off 30 as Prague Spartans Vanguards posted 105 against a Brno Rangers side playing their first game of the weekend. In reply, Somesekhar Banerjee (23) and wicket keeper Ushan Gunathilake (31) threatened to make it interesting, but needing 19 from the final over, Brno Rangers had left themselves too much to do and closed seven runs short.

After tasting defeat in their opening game, both Prague Barbarians Vandals and Brno Rangers aimed to bounce back in the final match of the day. And this one went down to the wire as well. Divyendra Singh (39) and Sabawoon Davizi (31) both made scoring look easy, but the Vandals self-destructed from a promising 77-1 to 98-8 in their 10 overs. Somsuvro Basu 3/10 and Rahat Ali 3/14 ran through the middle order to peg back the scoring rate. In reply, Dylan Steyn (33) cranked up the scoring rate, while opener Somesekhar Banerjee carried his bat for an unbeaten 35. In another tremendous final over bowled by Sabawoon Davizi, Brno Rangers made heavy weather of the four runs needed, but scrambled a single off the last ball to claim the victory.

With the defeat, the Vandals know they will have to beat unbeaten Vanguards convincingly on Sunday morning to stay in the competition. Judging by the narrow margins of these tight games on the opening day, any of the four teams can win this ECN Czech Super Series!
