The second edition of the Women’s ECC-W began on December 9, featuring five teams in the Challenger Division: hosts Spain, Austria, Germany, Jersey, and Czechia. The decision to divide the tournament into two divisions added a new layer of excitement, offering teams at different developmental stages an equal opportunity to compete at their level while still striving for glory.

The competition kicked off with a bang as Spain reignited their rivalry with Austria in the opening game. Austria, with fresh memories of their dramatic Golden Ball loss to Spain in last year’s edition, exacted revenge by clinching a hard-fought win. It set the tone for a tournament filled with close finishes, unforgettable performances, and moments that will live long in the memory.

Germany, participating in the ECC-W for the very first time, made an unforgettable entry into the competition. Their star batter, Christina Gough, etched her name in the history books with a sensational century on debut. Gough’s ton was only the second in ECC-W history, following Iris Zwilling’s two centuries in the inaugural edition.

Germany’s opening day was nothing short of remarkable as they registered two comprehensive wins without losing a single wicket. It was a dominant statement from the tournament debutants, and their performances throughout the week solidified their status as one of the top contenders.

Jersey established themselves as the team to beat, going unbeaten in the group stages with five wins and three abandoned games. Their consistency earned them a direct ticket to the final. Germany, finishing second, also earned a direct berth into the Qualifier, while Spain (third) and Austria (fourth) had to battle it out in the Eliminator.

Spain edged past Austria in a thrilling Eliminator to set up a clash with Germany in the Qualifier. Although Spain had defeated Germany earlier in the group stage, the Germans rose to the occasion when it mattered most. In a nail-biting contest, Germany emerged victorious, securing their spot in the final against the unbeaten Jersey.

The final was a tale of grit and determination. Germany won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid off as they restricted Jersey to a modest total of 70 runs—well below the tournament’s average score of 78. With their strong batting lineup, Germany seemed poised to claim the title.

But Jersey had other plans. With relentless energy and pinpoint accuracy, their bowlers turned the game on its head. Despite the low total, Jersey defended their score brilliantly, bowling out Germany to clinch a historic 15-run victory. The celebrations that followed were a testament to the hard work and determination of the Jersey team, who earned the distinction of being the first-ever ECC-W Challenger champions. Their triumph also secured their promotion to the Premier Division for the next edition.

The standout player of the tournament was undoubtedly Germany’s Christina Gough.
