Dream11 European Cricket Series St Gallen reached a stunning climax as the Zurich Nomads beat Olten in a dramatic final on Friday.
Batting first after winning the toss, Zurich Nomads racked up 110 which might have been considered a bit light after a typically rapid start from prolific openers Faheem Nazir and Hassan Ahmad.
Faheem firmly in controlWith heavy rain falling and the ever-increasing threat of thunder and lightning, Olten progressed to 84-4 with seven overs gone and looked favourites to claim the title.
However, the wobbles set in and previously unbeaten Olten lost their last six wickets for just seven runs in 13 balls. The final turned on a tremendous effort from Hassan Ahmad, diving full length on the boundary for a stunning catch.
Ultimately, Olten fell some some 19 runs short as Zurich Nomads become 2020 Dream11 European Cricket Series St Gallen Champions.
Earlier in the day, favourites Olten, unbeaten with six wins from six in the group stages, took on Cossonay in the first semi-final at 9 am CEST. After a brief pause for rain amid the threat of thunder, Olten’s Ali Usman made serious inroads into the batting, removing dangerman Jai Sinh first ball as Cossonay plunged to 13-3 after 14 balls. A recovery of sorts ensured as Cossonay regrouped to 84 after useful contributions from the lower order. In reply, given their dominance earlier in the week, Olten’s tried and trusted top order were expected to take care of this target without too much difficulty. However, burdened by the weight of expectation, Olten dipped to 12-3 themselves inside the first three overs. Vitally for Olten, skipper Ali Nayyer stayed at the crease to calm the nerves, mullering six sixes in his 45 off 17 balls to see his side home under intense pressure with nine balls to spare.
Second in the group standings with four wins from six, Zurich Nomads faced Winterthur in the second final. Batting first after winning the toss, the Nomads got on top early with Faheem Nazir and Hassan Ahmad compiling a brisk 71 partnership in five overs. Waqas Khawaja weighed in with an unbeaten 33 off 12 balls at the end as the Nomads notched an imposing 132. Winterthur got behind the asking rate early and never seriously threatened the target, closing on 68.
Cossonay again got the better of Winterthur in a thrilling Bronze Final to gain a semblance of consolation in a narrow 8 run victory.
