REPORT: Riyaan and Punjab Lions remain undefeated at 2020 CCA BAO Financial T20 Cup – Cyprus

On another sweltering hot day in Limassol, unbeaten Riyaan and Punjab Lions maintained their 100 percent records with convincing wins, while CTL Eurocollege got off the mark in round 3 of the 2020 CCA #BAOFinancial T20 Cup.

Cyprus Moufflons took on Riyaan in the first match of the day as sizzling hot temperatures baked the island. Batting first after winning the toss, the Moufflons motored to a rapid start with Mehran Khan making exactly 50 off 22 balls. Ravi Kumar provided some late impetus with 27, but all in all, a total of 175, was a little disappointing considering the Moufflons were well placed on 126 inside 11 overs.

Riyaan bowlers Ali Raza and Ram Jaishwal each bagged three wickets to contain the scoring rate. In reply, a week on from a magical unbeaten 251, Riyaan opener Attah Ullah, better known in Cyprus cricketing circles as Rehman, offered up a chance first ball which was sloppily dropped. Rehman gleefully took advantage of his good fortune by blasting 58 off 20 balls – depositing 50 per cent of balls faced for either four or six. However, Riyaan do not just rely on Rehman and possess plenty of batting strength in depth. Fellow opener Jeewan Lasmal (38) and skipper Shoaib Ahmad (35 off 13) both contributed, before Zeeshan Ahmad and Awais Liaqat eased Riyaan comfortably to a serene seven wicket victory with 19 balls to spare. Riyaan top group B after their second straight win.

Punjab Lions powered to a third consecutive win against the overpowered Sri Lankans and look serious contenders for the title. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, a Sri Lankan score of 139 was never likely to excessively trouble the powerful Punjab Lions batting line up. Too many of the Sri Lankans batting got in, but failed to go on to valuable scores. Player of the match Gurpartrap Singh followed three wickets with a blistering innings of 30 from only 8 deliveries at the top of the order. Zeeshan Mehmood and Harwinder Singh both made batting look easy as well as the Punjab Lions romped to their target with seven overs to spare.

In the final match of Round 3, CTL Eurocollege got off the mark with a tense victory over Nicosia XI Fighters. Amandeep Singh and Murali Alanki both bagged three wickets apiece to skittle the Fighters to an ordinary looking 120 with 15 deliveries unused. In reply, CTL Eurocollege looked to be choking at 27-3, and later 6 down for 88. However, Manikanta Ranimekala managed to hold the innings together with a composed 67 off 42 balls to save the day.
