Episode 35 of European Cricket Stories focuses on one of the strongest cricket communities in Europe. 🎙️
ECN Founder Daniel Weston sits down with Neil McCrae, who at the time of the interview was Coach of the Jersey Cricket National Team, to reflect on a journey built on development, trust and long term vision.
Neil grew up playing cricket in Scotland, spending summers immersed in backyard games, school cricket and club competitions. Cricket was simply part of everyday life and that foundation shaped his approach to coaching and player development.
In 2014, Neil was offered the role with Jersey Cricket, beginning a journey that has seen the island emerge as a consistent and competitive force on the European stage. Jersey’s strength lies in its tight knit community, with players progressing through the youth system together and forming bonds that translate into unity and belief on the field. They play like brothers and that connection makes them a formidable opponent.
The conversation explores Neil’s work across youth pathways, his commitment to developing club structures and supporting local coaches, and the importance of creating an environment where players can thrive. Neil also highlights the impact of cricket being shown live on television, explaining how visibility builds confidence, raises standards and inspires the next generation to pick up the sport.
