Dream11 European Cricket Series St. Gallen kicked off under beautiful blue skies in Switzerland on Monday.
In the opening contest of the day, favourites Zurich Nomads powered to a massive score of 133, laying down a marker for the tournament. Opener Faheem Nazi found scoring easy with a blistering 45 off 17 balls, although Eden Wardle stopped the bleeding with a couple of wickets in his encouraging spell. In reply, Zurich Crickets were never at the races and well beaten.
Perhaps it was over-confidence carried over from their dominance in the opening game, but Olten towered above Zurich Nomads next up, with the Nomads making 44 runs fewer than in their opening blitz.
Chasing “only” 89, Olten’s Yasotharan Thirnavukarasu biffed the first ball of the reply for six, and made the Nomads pay for a sloppy drop off the next ball. Mohamed Shahid also motored along to a rapid 30 off 15 balls as Olten coasted to victory with 14 balls to spare.
Olten carried on that form with an easy win, knocking off local favourites St Gallen’s paltry total of 64 in only 4.1 overs with Muhammad Waqar mullering 34 off 19 balls.
St Gallen got off the mark with victory in the next against Zurich Crickets, but not before 17-year-old talent Eden Wardle hit the headlines with a hat-trick to end the innings - taking a wicket with every ball he bowled.
Unfortunately for the Crickets, they couldn’t take advantage of Wardle’s wicket taking wonders and slipped to an 18-run defeat.
In the final game of the day, Zurich Crickets slipped to their third straight defeat against Winterthur, who comfortably chased down 62 with 21 balls to spare.
