RECAP – DAY 2 – FanCode ECS Malta

Overseas began the second day of FanCode ECS Malta with a spectacular 60-run victory over Mater Dei. OVR were asked to bat first by their opponents and OVR responded well with Charl Kleinepunte and Callum Burke taking control of the game. Kleinepunte scored 33 runs off 24 deliveries while Callum Burke took just 23 balls to score 37 runs. A late blitz from Heinrich Gericke, who scored 26 runs in just nine deliveries, studded with three sixes, made sure that OVR finished on a high with 110 runs on the board.

In response, MTD failed to build significant partnerships during the run-chase. Two OVR bowlers wreaked havoc – Captain Jurg Hirschi picked up four wickets for 13 runs in his two overs while Man of the Match Callum Burke scalped four wickets and conceded just a single run in his 1.5 overs, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick as well. In the end, OVR won the match by a huge margin of 60 runs.

In the second match of the day, OVR restricted MTD to a score of 82-5 after the first innings. Captain Sam Aquilina and Michael Nazir played valuable knocks with the bat. For OVR, Jurg Hirschi was again amongst the wickets, returning figures of two for 15.

Kleinepunte and Andrew Naudi led the charge in the Overseas run-chase and got the job done without losing a wicket. Kleinepunte was awarded the Man of the Match for his 58 not out off a mere 29 balls, a calculated onslaught that included nine fours and two sixes. Naudi, Malta's most capped player with 62 caps, played second-fiddle to perfection as OVR breached the target with all 10 wickets in hand and 14 balls to spare.

Super Kings (SKI) began their ECS campaign with a fantastic win over Swieqi United (SWU). Asked to bat first, Varun Prasath played a blinder for Super Kings, making 63 off just 29 deliveries including four fours and six sixes. Prasath’s innings, at a strike rate of 217.2, eventually saw him winning the Man of the Match award.

Swieqi United batsmen performed horribly during the run-chase. Captain Anil Qadir was the highest-scorer for them with 36 runs off 25 balls. Nobody else managed to cross four runs for Swieqi United and they ended up falling 77 runs short of the mark.

Super Kings extended their winning streak in the final match of day two of the ECS Malta. Once again batting first, SKI put up 107 runs on board with Gopal Chaturvedi and Varun Prasath top-scoring.

Opener Imran Ameen led from the front in the run-chase with his 24-ball half-century. However, with the exception of Ijaz Hussain, no other batsman managed to get into double digits. Ihtisham Ishaq picked up four wickets and conceded 19 runs in his two overs to ensure that SKI would defend their total with ease.
