REPORT: MATCHDAY 2 – Seaside seal Golden Ball success at European Cricket Series Gothenburg

European Cricket Series Gothenburg witnessed another extraordinary moment in the opening contest of the day on Tuesday between Seaside CC and Jönköping CA with the second-ever Golden Ball finish.

Making their bow in the competition, Jönköping CA progressed to 90 with the rain set to become an increasing factor in proceedings. In reply, Seaside skipper Umair Chaudary led the way with 44 off 27 as the weather turned nasty. Needing nine to win from the final three balls, Zahoor Sabir looked to have turned the tide in Seaside’s favour with successive boundaries. However, with the scores tied, Sabir was adjudged lbw to Muhammad Tanveer’s final ball of the innings. The European Cricket Series Golden Ball regulation means that in the event of a tie with scores level, the batting side stays at the crease and has to score two or more runs to force a win.

Sarwar scampers two for Seaside to seal Golden Ball victory!

Amid great scenes of jubilation, despite the damp conditions, Usman Sarwar scampered two runs for Seaside to seal the Golden Ball victory after a fielder slipped to the ground and misfielded at mid-wicket in the increasingly wet outfield.

The brainchild behind the new European Cricket Series Golden Ball is European Cricket League commentator and presenter Vinny Sandhu aka “Mr Maximo.” In March, in Alicante we witnessed the historic first-ever Golden Ball Finish.

Unfortunately for Jönköping, their next match with Watan Zalmi fell victim to the inclement weather with the points shared.

However, after all that Golden Ball glory, there was no holding unbeaten Seaside in their next two games, easily overcoming Hisingen and Watan Zalmi. Seaside restricted Hisingen to only 50 with Zahoor Sabir (2/7) and Aditya Arora (2/10) doing the business with the ball. In reply, Seaside knocked off the runs with 4 overs to spare with Zawwar Hussain, in particular, making short thrift of the target.

Watan Zalmi fared a little better with the bat against Seaside, racking up 76 with Aditya Arora in the wickets again. Full of confidence, Seaside cruised to the target with 22 balls to spare with Zawwar Hussain the main man with 43 off 23 balls to cap a fine day for his side. Accordingly, Seaside now top the standings with a 100 percent record from four games.

Jönköping CA gained some consolation for their painful Golden Ball experience with a comfortable 46 run win over Hisingen. Jönköping posted a massive 110 with Naser Batcha hitting five sixes in his destructive 48 off 19 balls, while Riaz Khan joined in the fun with 44 off 27. Hisingen were never in the hunt in the face of tight bowling from Muhammad Ismail (2/5) and Sahargul Shirzad.
