REPORT: MATCHDAY 2 – Dream11 European Cricket Series St. Gallen

Dream11 European Cricket Series St. Gallen continued Tuesday blessed by wonderfully blue skies in sunny Switzerland. In the opening contest of the day, newcomers Power outpowered the Zurich Crickets with Asad Mahmood and Ashfaq Ahmad instrumental in a 92 partnership in just 4.4 overs.

16-year-old left-armer Eden Wardle, who hit the headlines the previous day by bagging the first hat-trick in Dream11 European Cricket Series history, could not repeat his heroics with the ball against the Power. In reply, Zurich Crickets mustered 88 with opener James West carrying his bat for a well-compiled 45 off 30 balls.

However, Power found the leaders Olten a much different proposition and were well beaten in the second game of the day. Olten towered to a massive total of 149 - a tournament best by some margin. At the top of the order, Mohamed Shahid 61 (24) and Yasotharan Thirnavukarasu 49 (23) set the tone with a magnificent 99 partnership in 6.4 overs. Power suffered an outage for 82 and a wake-up call after their dominant victory earlier in the day.

Hosts St. Gallen then entered the fray for a triple header of matches which would decide their fate. Hopes were high that the arrival of guest star Armghan Khan of Catalunya CC would give a serious shot in the arm to St Gallen’s chances of progressing in the tournament.

However, despite Armghan Khan’s stable 23 off 17 and Nithurshan Shivaneshwaran hitting 10 off the last two balls, St Gallen’s paltry total of 79 never looked likely to challenge Winterthur who had impressed on their only outing so far on Day one. Saqib Ali took his side home with a brutal 32 off 10 balls to add to his decent bowling which had stemmed the flow of St. Gallen runs.

Seeking a win to stay in the competition, St. Gallen felt the full force of pre-tournament favourites Zurich Nomads, who were looking to recover from a heavy defeat to Olten.

The Nomads motored along to 112 with opener Faheem Nazir again top scoring. In reply, St. Gallen were never at the races. Shijo Joseph snared tournament best figures of 4/3 and deservedly bagged the Player of the Match award as well.

In the final game of the day, a somewhat demoralised St. Gallen outfit again came off second best to Power, who were themselves looking to bounce back from defeat earlier in the day.

St Gallen were restricted to 84 with Baljinder Singh doing the damage with 3-9. Power never looked likely to come unstuck on the chase. The Power surge in the innings came once again from opener Osama Mahmood with an unbeaten 35.
