Episode 38 of European Cricket Stories explores one of Europe’s oldest and most fascinating cricket cultures. 🎙️
ECN Founder Daniel Weston sits down with Konstantinos Vasilas, Coach of the Greek Cricket National Team, to discuss cricket’s deep roots in Greece and its continued growth today. Cricket has been part of Greek culture for nearly 200 years, dating back to when the British Navy introduced the game to Corfu. A match played in a town square captured the imagination of locals, and the sport quickly took hold on the island.
Konstantinos talks about the strong foundations built on the Greek islands, including the historic Gymnastikos Cricket Club, founded in 1892, the oldest cricket club in Greece. His own family connection runs deep, with his uncle taking up cricket as a leisure sport after playing football at the club.
The conversation highlights the development of cricket programs in local schools, supported by coaching input from the ECB and English players who regularly travel to Corfu to play and contribute to the local game. While expansion to the mainland remains a key goal for the federation, a lack of suitable cricket grounds presents challenges.
Tape ball cricket has become a vital solution, allowing the game to be played anywhere. This approach has helped cricket take root in Athens, where four local teams now compete in the Greek domestic league. Konstantinos reflects on the obstacles still to overcome, but also on the steady progress and growing popularity of cricket, not only in Greece but across Europe as a whole.
