Team Preview for Royal Roma

Royal Roma CC are an emerging club in Roman cricket. They went winless in the T20 competition this year but got close to a win on several occasions – on others the weather intervened and prevented them getting the results required to qualify for the quarter finals. They are an aggressive batting unit who will enjoy the freedom that T10 cricket allows.

Captain: Rajwinder Singh

Main Wicketkeeper: Mubarak Hossain

Key Players:

Mubarak Hossain will be one of the batting stars of the series in my opinion. He passed 50 ten times in 2020 and went on to make centuries on two of those occasions. Opposition bowlers will want to see the back of this opening batsman early in the innings otherwise ten overs will seem a long time!

Rajwinder Singh is the club captain and one of the spiritual leaders at Royal Roma. He is the club’s all-time leading wicket-taker and has a big role to play if they are to get results on the board this week in Rome. In addition to his bowling responsibilities, he is likely to bat in the number three position.

Shoaib Awan is “THE KING OF SIXES”. He scores a higher proportion of his runs in maximos than any other batsmen so he will want to put his stamp on his first ever European Cricket Series.

Umar Shahzad will take the new ball. He is a left arm paceman who possesses the ability to swing the ball into the right-hander. He took a hat trick in the first over of a match in the domestic competition this year so would like to reproduce that kind of wizardly in the ECS!

Team Preview for Padova

Padova CC is one of two cricket clubs based in Padova, a small city just west of Venice in Italy’s north. A strong Sri Lankan influence is evident in the club’s playing group and although they could only boast a 2-6 record in domestic T20s this season, they will be competitive. They will have to look outside their regular superstars, with three of their regular players unable to take the field this week in Rome.

Captain: Nuwan Sameera

Main Wicketkeeper: Nissanka Kuda

Key Players:

Nuwan Sameera will bear a lot of responsibility for the success of the team he leads this week in Rome. He will open the batting and the bowling for Padova, his experience being crucial if Padova are to progress beyond the group stage. He took 25 wickets in 2019 and will be looking to take key wickets early on innings to put his side in a winning position.

Damith Kosala is a very versatile young cricketer. At only 19 years of age, he can bowl left arm pace and bat in the top order, while covering the wicketkeeping duties if circumstances dictate. The European Cricket Series provides an enormous opportunity for him to display his talent to the cricketing world.

Akash Handun is another youngster to watch. He has a very unusual action which can be quite off-putting and effective, especially in this format of cricket. He can also provide some insurance, batting in the middle order.

Radika Suren is a very wily cricketer. His leg spin will be an attacking weapon and he has a handy knack of picking up the big wicket. Padova will look to him to provide the magic moment when the game is on the line.

Mr Maximo’s tip: ROYAL ROMA

Padova at full strength would probably be favourites for this clash but they are missing some key personnel and I think that hampers their prospects. Royal Roma were unlucky not to register a win in the T20 competition this year but I think they can get off to a good start to their European Cricket League by overcoming Padova in the second match of Monday in Rome.
